Can Artificial Intelligence design optimized structures?

The year 2022 has been the year of the explosion of the text2img AI. The public release of DALL-E (https://lnkd.in/dU5xP-FJ) as pay per use and the free to use Stable Diffusion, have marked an inflexion point so strongly that institutions worldwide are rushing to first, understand its implications and then, regulate accordingly. This has been possible due to the exponential growth in investment in AI developments. Text2img is just an example of what can be achieved nowadays. It is not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ it will take over any other field. In CITD Engineering & Technologies we are exploring this technology and trying to advance what can be done in the field of space structures. From photorealistic images of structural concepts as shown in the pictures, to complete parts fully designed using only their specifications as input. These AI are trained and existing data as well as their capacity to create something genuinely new, are currently limited. The implications of this limitation/feature are also explored. Results of these investigations will be shown by Alejandro Stewart during the 17th ECSSMET 2023 European Conference on Spacecraft Structures, Materials, and Environmental Testing (28-30 March 2023 - Toulouse | France)
